New Kitty

So we went to the Humane Society on Saturday and after four hours of deliberation decided to get this kitty. We still don't know how he will get along with Dido, but we hope that when they are introduced it will go well. His name is Bullseye, but we are calling him Cye. (sometimes I call him Charlie for no good reason at all.) He is very sweet, a little scared, but got on the bed last night and pestered us for attention so he isn't that scared.

Andrea's Birthday Party, Philadelphia, June 16th

Here are some of my pictures from my sister's birthday party at El Azteca. She got to keep that cool sombrero! The ice cream made her very happy...at least I think it was the ice cream and not the margarita.....hmmm.

Clay in the Kitchen

Clay tries to cook every Sunday so he doesn't have to eat yucky hospital cafeteria food (like liver and onions). Here he is making curried tuna and a miso glazed salmon for the week. Ah spicy Clay!

Christine, Kevin, & Silas in San Diego

At the end of June, Kevin, Christine and Silas visited us while in town. Here they are in La Jolla after Thai food and cookies.
Silas and Dido get to know each other under Clay's watchful eye.

Cassie Post-Surgery

Cassie has been sick now for three months with an ear infection and a tumor obstructing her ear canal. She got surgery this week where the vets removed her inner ear canal. Her pathology came back as squamous cell cancer so we will just wait and see whether or when the tumor reoccurs. Here she is in full post-op glory with her lovely blue soft collar and drain. Gremlinesque!

Cinco de Mayo

So the UU church is starting a youthful adults group and had a Cinco de Mayo party to kick it off. We played a lot of games and then we hit the pinata.....it was a donkey pinata. Clay happened to be the one who broke it. You can see the result above, which actually did not result in candy falling from the sky. We all had to smash its body on the ground before the candy (and condoms) came out. I think the condoms were there because they were left over from a safe sex drive and, being strawberry, they seemed candy-like. Afterwards, Clay was fortunate enough to get to wear the donkey's you know what on his head! Doesn't my husband look handsome? Note that there was a two drink minimum so Clay's decision to wear a donkey's ass on his head was a sober one. This is why we want him to drink-so he has a good excuse for his behavior!

Hillcrest Sign

This is the neon Hillcrest sign on University, the main drag in our neighborhood. Very 1960s feeling; an overhead neon sign. Most neighborhoods have them here. I plan to take more neon at night pictures in San Diego.

Hillcrest at Night-Ebisu

This is Ebisu, our favorite neighborhood sushi bar. We eat here once a week or so. They know us and we have gotten to know one of the waiters who, of course, is applying to medical school and has just returned from doing work abroad, in Nicaragua I think. He also loved organic chemistry, but he may just be saying that to get a good tip. After all, who loves organic chemistry? Just kidding!

Our Apartment & Its Smallnes

Our apartment is two rooms. One is the TV watching, reading area and the other the bedroom, dining, and dissertation work area. There are sliding double wooden doors between the two. The space is surpisingly functional and I wonder now why I needed so many more rooms and so much more space in the old apartment. I do need every inch of closet space here however and always more boxes and organizers so at least there is a lot of storage space. I colonize all the space with papers anyway. I obviously cleaned them up for this photo.

The Building Kegorator

Our neighbors, Laura and Cecil, work for Stone Brewing here in San Diego. They get free beer...a lot of free beer including a keg a month. Being generous souls they have installed a kegorator for the building. At first the building tenants were tenative, but after a few months the 13 people in the building manage to drain it in 2-3 weeks. Even those of us who don't drink beer very much appreciate the symbol of neighborly goodwill and building solidarity. I have even considered trying out some recipes that include beer like drunken beans or rarebit risotto with brocolli and beer, cheese, tomatoes. Yum.

Interior of Apartment Building

Dormer bed converted to closet

So the large panel is used to pull down into a bed.

Our Hillcrest Apt in San Diego

Here is our beautiful apartment building in Hillcrest. It was a 1920s hotel and the apartments have dormer beds that pull out of the wall. Actually only one apartment has an intact one, most have been converted into closets, which is cool in its own way. There are some nice architectural details and the color scheme of the interior public space is turquiose on lighter turquiose with a yellow cream color. I will later included pictures of both details because I know they are hard to imagine, but I am having techincal difficulties with those pictures now.
